Artist Spotlight: My "Sweet Nothings" for Sharyn Maceren
Sharyn Maceren is a Pilipina-American singer/songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area and many of her freestyle/dance fans know her from the hit song, "Hard to Get." However, it wasn't always like that in the beginning. Sharyn had no idea what her friends were talking about when they would tell her that they heard her on the radio! "I never really believed it myself until I switched on the radio and heard a DJ actually playing it..." The shocker was when the DJ announced the artist of the song as "The S Factor."
"Confusion and controversy would supremely overshadow this early part of Sharyn's musical career but like any true fighter, Sharyn faced the music and knocked out all the issues in record time. Soon, Sharyn would get back into the ring doing what she does best. But this time... she did it her way."

Sharyn collaborated with Glenn Gutierrez (known for his work with M:G, Jocelyn Enriquez, Jaya, and Stevie B.) under his independent record label Planet Hype and in 2002 they released her first album, Always Dreamin'. The album was especially made for the fans that had supported her from the beginning with tracks that ranged from dance, pop and r&b. The album proved to be a success reaching the top 1% of Amazon.com's Sales Rank and having hit tracks like "A Little More Time" reaching iTunes Top Dance 100 chart for the US/UK. Other hit tracks include, In Just One Night, When The Record Spins, A Love Divine and New (which was featured in a UC Irvine PCN commercial spoof ayPod!)
In December 2007, Sharyn's second album, "Nighttime Land" was released on iTunes. She asked her fans what types of music they wanted to hear on this album and also wanted to show them more of her musical spectrum. "Though most of her earlier work mainly revolved around romantic issues, her newer material reveals an artist who isn't afraid to touch on other subjects." Hit tracks from this album include: Can U Wait, Sweet Nothings, U Love Me Good and Want It Want It.
"Music always meant something to me because it always made me feel understood. Because of that, it has been my passion- to sing, to dance, to write, to play the piano, you know, everything... But ...as I've gotten older, I've realized that... this gift that that I've been given was handed to me so that I, too, can help people to feel understood... and inspired... Though it's not easy to take the road less traveled... knowing that I have a purpose in my life makes it easy for me to do what I love. I am blessed to have family, friends, and fans who support me and help make this journey a beautiful one."
Being a Freestyle/Dance music fan, I have followed Sharyn Maceren from the controversial beginnings of "Hard to Get" to her latest album "Nighttime Land." I am amazed by the quality of her voice when she sings as well as the production of the beats in every track. I wish Sharyn great success in her music career and look forward to her upcoming performance at Fiesta Filipina in San Francisco on Saturday June 7th 2008!
