Ready for more Pilipino American domination on America Best Dance Crew? In anticipation for more Pilipino representation from across the nation (phew!) on ABDC Season 3, we have exclusive interviews of some up-and-coming crews from the Los Angeles auditions in late November '08.  Some of the best crews from up and down the West Coast have awesome stories about how they were formed and give their advice to aspiring dance crews.  Some of the crews made it to the first airing, which will be shown tonight. Guess which one(s)!  Also, Jabbawockeez' Rainen Pagiuo will be stepping it up for the Pil-Ams as the first guest judge ever for the show.

BakitWhy.com Multimedia Correspondent Joe Gravina interviews Body Poets, World Famous, Greyscale, The Hype, Boxcuttahz, Transitions, HeadHunters, and Vibe Tribe

MTV's less-than-a-year-old hip hop dance series has overwhelmingly proven to a global mainstream audience that Pilipino Americans have mad dancing skills.  Season One champions, the Jabbawockeez, displayed their sick technicality combined with innovative creativity into one of the best series of routines on TV.  Season Two champions, Super Cr3w, showed that the raw power of breakdancing -- one of the first true hip hop dance styles -- and energetic showmanship wins over the crowd.  With Kaba Modern (formed from the Pilipino American collegiate organization Kababayan), Supreme Soul, SoReal Cru, Boogie Bots, and single appearances in A.S.I.I.D, Phresh Select, Xtreme Dance Force, and Sass x7, Pilipino Americans not only dominate the scene, but are also a critical part of the evolution of dance worldwide.

Essence Audition

Formality Audition

ABDC has not only been a celebration of Pilipinos in mainstream dance, but also the inherent diversity of the hip hop dance community.  How do you feel Pilipinos and minorities have been respresented not only in ABDC, but in the dance world in general?

Why does it matter if Filipinos are on the show? Hip Hop was created for people's voices to be heard and to bring people together. Your making it a race issue and some people dont like all this OH WE (INSERT RACE) ARE THE BEST DANCERS!!! uh no. Who cares about race!!!! Thats why some crews are getting screwed over you have people voting for crews based on their race!

I completely understand your concern, and I agree there are many out there who do vote/endorse things based on race. However, on BakitWhy.com we strive to highlight (rather than impose) the accomplishments of Pilipino Americans in the mainstream due to decades of under representation. We hope that our content, including this article, recognizes the efforts of Pil-Ams rather than impressing thoughts into our audience. We made it a point to include the vast diversity of the Hip Hop world in the video interview and much of our content, and I'm glad so many people who aren't Pil-Am could also share their interesting stories.

By the way, I'm also rooting for the hip hop cloggers, they're just plain awesome.

It's great to see even more Pil-Ams on Season 3. Dance crews have been been around among Pil-Ams for decades and finally the world can see their distinctive talents showcased on National TV.

I think the coolest thing about ABDC is not only the fact that I've never seen so many Filipinos on American TV being the average white dude, but also you have someone like Joey Antonio from ASIID being able to represent for the disabled/deaf community. I'm a hard of hearing teen so seeing that on TV-- still left a big impression on me, so even if they weren't the winners still left a huge impact. It let people know that just because the music always isn't clear, the dancing always is. ABDC has definitely help bridge that gap between minorities and talent and just shows people what they are-- even if I do typically favor the Filipino dancers because they just kill it--not sure who I'm favoring this time around, but they will probably be inadvertently Pinoy knowing me.
