FIND Conference 2010: Laban

Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue

Members of the Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND) network came together to the University of Maryland for their Spring Conference on February 27th, 2010.  The theme for the conference was "Laban" (the Tagalog word for “to Fight”), which was aimed towards shedding light into the past struggles from when Pilipinos first came to the United States, the struggles that we face today, and how to combat these issues. The conference was split up into three sessions that were comprised of three different workshops each, which allowed the delegates to pick and learn about subjects they may be interested in.

I.  Magkaisa: Coming Together

Workshops in the first session were geared toward some of the major struggles Pilipinos have faced in Pilipino-American history; from the initial settlements in the United States, the fight for equity for our WWII Veterans, and the experiences of the Manong generation. The biggest concern about the many struggles of the past is that they will remain there and may be forgotten by the upcoming generations. These workshops were great in telling the stories of these three points in our history to teach members of the current generation and to pass it on to the future, thereby ensuring that they will not soon be forgotten.

II. Tumayo:  Stand Up Now

Second session workshops highlighted issues that Pilipinos face today.  Topics that were addressed included the following; the social and cultural struggles of the Pilipina, the political issues that affect Pilipinos such as immigration and political ideology, and the evolution of the Pilipino-American identity. These current issues affect the community today, so they obviously deserved a great deal of attention. These workshops helped to bring together the delegates by letting us know that we still have a long way to go in the struggle.

III: Laban: Fight for a Cause

In the final session, the workshops were geared towards giving the delegates ideas on how to spread their causes and foster changes in the community - through charity, artistic expression, and social media. In response to relief efforts spawned by Typhoon Ondoy, delegates were made aware of the various means of providing relief assistance in the Philippines. Future need for change will come in many forms as we continue our advancement into the 21st century. Expressions of thought will not only come through words, but through our different expressions of talent as well. We will also be sharing and spreading our cause through various forms of social media networks; including Facebook, Twitter, as well as through online communities such as BakitWhy.com.

Afterwards, the delegates were rewarded by an amazing show of talent. FIND featured spoken word poetry by Alan DePerio and iLL-Literacy, cultural dances by the local Pilipino American Cultural Arts Society (PACAS), a demonstration by the Rutgers University Filipino Martial Arts, modern dance by the Tito BoyScouts and AirPort Crew, and the musical talents of Michelle Panlaqui, Vince Lacsamana, Kheem and the Boys, Ivy Rose, Jay Legaspi, and Melissa Polinar. Based in the many conversations overheard throughout the performances and seeing various tweets from the evening, everyone was amazed at the talent that had been featured in the show!

In his opening remarks, Alan DePerio, one of the Conference Tri-Chairs, reflected on his past FIND experiences, and had hoped that for this conference would "ignite, or . . . re-ignite that passion" on what it meant to be Pilipino, or even Pilipino-American.  By attending FIND, it is hoped that the delegates all left with that same passion, and take the lessons learned as a means to continue to "laban" for what they believe in.

Hey guys,

Thank you all for your appraisal and support! Mine name is Cris Eleazar, aka 'Chi.' FIND, Inc. is an internationally-known, student led organization similar to organizations such as MAFA, SCPASA, and ECAASU. We seek to unite collegiate Filipino and Asian organizations in the East Coast. All are welcome to attend, even if you are a nonmember school within the districts, in high-school, or from 'DZ'.

To respond to previous comments, FIND's member organizations are from schools in 7 Districts. DI is the Boston area, D2 is the CT/RI area, D3 is North jersey, metro NY, and long island, D4 is upstate ny, D5 is south jersey/PA/DE, D6 is DC/MD/north VA, and D7 is south VA. TO explain it on the very basic level, in the Fall we have our Dialogue, a workshops based conference were delegates are assigned to workshops and EXPERIENCE the material through...dialogue. In the spring, we have our Conference, which is speaker-based. Several speakers are selected and delegates decide where they want to go throughout the day.

There are several details that I could mention here, but this is already a lengthy comment. If you would like to discuss this further, please e-mail me at celeazar@ramapo.edu!

Again, your support and appraisal is greatly appreciated! Maraming salamat!

Is FIND an event that any person from any U.S. University can attend? I would love to send people from my University's Filipino Student Association up there. Perhaps, all of the FSAs here in Texas can send their reps. up there next time!

Kaywan and Ryan got most of it covered. We welcome anyone interested to come join us during our get togethers! If you are interested in becoming an affiliated school or want more information on it please let me know! We have two gatherings each year; Dialogue, which is in the Fall, and Conference, which is in the Spring! It's always an amazing time at both gatherings.

I think Ryne and Kaywan pretty much have it covered. The seven districts of FIND stretch from Maine down to Virginia, with the eighth district for delegates outside of those states and for the non-member schools, but I'll defer to someone associated with them to confirm. But yeah, if you'd like to attend, FIND has two events each year - the "Dialogue" in the Fall, and the "Conference" in the Spring. I would say check them out if you get the chance... The more the merrier! =)

Yep, they'll definitely take anyone in. When I was an undergrad Purdue University was almost a mainstay at FIND (all the way from Indiana), and a couple years back a good sized delegation from Illinois went to FIND Spring in Maryland.

Hmm when I was there (they could explain this better), I saw that schools on the east coast are split into "districts," and they send delegates to the conference. BIG however, they have a district "z"," which have schools outside of the FIND area. Which means guests :). There were a few from Georgia who attended as well. Send reps I say! Awesome conference :)

This was definitely one of the best conferences of FIND that I have attended! The fellowship with everyone was the highlight! It was great meeting key members of bakitwhy also! I hope you all enjoyed your time at the conference. Thanks so much for being a part of FIND and making it so successful! (thanks for the shout-out kaywan!) Hope you guys come back out to cover more events!
