October 12, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA – A benefit concert on Saturday, October 24 at Café-Club Fais Do-Do in Los Angeles has been organized in response to the medical needs of victims of the late September-early October typhoons that struck the Philippines.
Entitled, A Flood Of Hope, the concert will feature soul/funk band Elson and the Soul Barkada, the powerpop band Random Ninjas and Kapoteng Bakal, a “supergroup” comprised of former members of various popular ‘80s and ‘90s rock bands from the Philippines. Additional acts are also slated to perform.
A community-based fundraising drive in conjunction with the concert has also been planned, with check donations being solicited through Friday, October 30. Donors are especially encouraged to reach out to their respective communities and networks for additional contributions.
Proceeds from both the October 24 concert and related community fundraiser will go to Doctors With Borders (also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres), an international organization dedicated to emergency medical relief operations in war zones and places of natural disasters. The organization has already sent out response teams to areas of the Philippines ravaged by typhoons Ketsana (a.k.a. Ondoy) and Parma (a.k.a. Pepeng).
“There have been many wonderful fundraising and donation drives held in response to the typhoons,” said A Flood Of Hope organizer Elson Trinidad, “But I’m especially concerned about the medical needs of the victims. Relatively few people have died in the typhoon, but many more can still succumb afterward to bacterial infection, exposure to contaminated water and diseases like malaria. The typhoons are gone, but we can definitely still save lives.”
Check donations for A Flood Of Hope should be made out to “Doctors Without Borders” and submitted at the concert or mailed to: A Flood Of Hope, 1128 N. Heliotrope Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90029. Cash or material supplies will not be accepted.
Café-Club Fais Do-Do is located at 5257 W. Adams Blvd. in Los Angeles.
