What's the first thing you see when you type "Filipino" in Google? Oh, the Filipino Wikipedia entry...well what's that to the right under "Sponsored Links"? That's right, 100% Filipino Dating Site! Just what you were looking for? Probably not.
Google's AdSense engine automatically displays advertisements based on predominant surfing trends, frequency of keywords in searches, and a multitude of unknown algorithms. Sadly in AdSense's logic, the word "Filipino" is associated with mail-order brides and pornography. Considering the long struggle against the sexual exploitation of Filipinas, it's shocking to see these images alongside a community activist's MySpace page, a Filipino student organization's online group, or an artistic Filipina's blog.
Christine at the legendary Fil-Am video blog/comedy experience, Happy Slip, has been plagued with these inconsiderate ads for some time. Her MySpace page, which is a significant portal to her website, has been littered with these "smart" ads. She asks for everyone's help in notifying Google of the severity of the issue. Leave a comment on her blog entry and she'll forward your message to Google in one ginormous package.

No Facebook?

This is one of the reasons why I'm so discouraged to go onto MySpace these days. It even happens when you're on your personal page. I dont want to see a Sponsored Ad thats telling me how "Filipina Beauties are looking for US Men." I do wonder if MySpace even knows that they're promoting mail order brides and the sex industry. Hmm...
