If you're reading this article, chances are you also have a Facebook/Myspace/Friendster page or a Twitter account. Now more than ever, the Internet has been able to give us the opportunity to network and socialize with people around the world. However, given the recent events in The Philippines, social networking sites have become the place to find up-to-the-second information on news that is important to us.
It is no secret that the coverage of Typhoon Ondoy (and the new "Super Typhoon" Pepeng/Parma) has been little to nonexistent in mainstream media. People like me who have become increasingly frustrated with the lack of coverage and information that these outlets have been providing have turned to social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter to not only relay and share information, but also read about the news from the actual people being affected. I have used my Facebook page as a central information center for the relief efforts happening in Fresno, and I use Twitter to keep up with the constant updates and personal accounts of Ondoy and Pepeng. Sites such as BakitWhy.com, pnoyapparel.com, and others have also been using these networks to spread the word on donation/volunteering opportunities.
As more people join these social networking sites, our ability to reach out to more people becomes much easier. With our networks growing every day, how will you keep up with current events?
