Everyone is a fan of the underdog story, which is such a common yet compelling topic in the sports world. Many people are a fan of every team that are not the Lakers or the Yankees. They want to see the New England Patriots lose in the Super Bowl, and watch Sidney Crosby choke on the deciding penalty shot. Longshots such as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Philadelphia 76ers of the early 2000’s garner fans who long for a chance to witness Goliath fall to David.

This Saturday, another underdog comes into play as everyone’s “favorite” boxer, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. squares off against Sugar” Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on May 1st at MGM’s Grand Garden arena.

Here is a quick look at both fighters in part 2 of the aftermath of the Pacquiao/Mayweather Jr. fallout.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is certainly a boxer who walks the walk and talks the talk - a lot of talk! ‘Money’ boasts a 40-0 undefeated record; winning 6 championships in 5 different weight divisions. He plays to his strengths in every fight, combining fleet footwork, blurring punching speed, and a painful barrages of punches to pick apart his foes. Mayweather Jr. has finished off more than 60% of his fights due to knockout, which reveals that big things can come in small packages. Shane Mosley, a native of Pomona, California, brings more experience to the fights - boasting a 46-5 record. Not to be outdone, Mosley had finished nearly 80% of his fights via knockout, and has garnered 5 world championships to his resume. ‘Sugar’ is the epitome of hard work, building off a stable foundation and rising to the occasion when the time calls for it, and what better time to do that than now. Mosley will have the support of the Philippines as he tries to overcome the odds and defeat Mayweather Jr.  in his hometown in the Cty of Sin.

On the other hand, the NBA playoffs are in full swing as week 2 of the playoffs nears its end.

In the east, the top seeds have done their jobs as the Cavaliers, Magic, and Celtics finished off their adversaries quite handily as all teams defeated their foes in 5 games or less. The Cavs and Celts are set for round 2 while the Magic still await their opponents. The surprise in the East so far as been the Milwaukee Bucks. They were an afterthought after losing game 2 and finding themselves in a 2-0 hole, but they have since put up 3 wins in a row and look to advance over the more talented Atlanta Hawks on their home court tonight. The West, on the other hand, solidified the fact that the top teams in the conference are all evenly matched. All series have taken at least 6 games to decide who will move on one step closer to the championship. Despite the unexpected return of Brandon Roy, the Blazers fell to the Suns in 6 and the gritty Spurs were able to topple the higher seeded Mavericks and advance to face the Spurs in the next round. The Lakers and Jazz look to finish their series tonight as well, and earn the right complete the Western quarterfinals.

Playoffs and prized pugilists this week, what more in the sports world can you ask for? ;)
