Summer days are soon approaching, and in Southern California that can only mean picture perfect sunny skies and the urge to be outside. In the upcoming weeks if you find yourself somewhere in the SoCal area, be sure to check out one or all of these sporting events fit for this time of the year.

  • Exhibition Basketball Game: California vs. Philippines

May 25, 7p, Palos Verdes Peninsula High School; Rolling Hills Estates, CA

Local all Pilipino-American basketball club Maharlika HS Elite will host a game versus the Philippine under-18 national team. This will be a treat for everyone to see as local homegrown players from California square off against our native Philippine brothers and sisters from across the ocean, showcasing their roundball talent in a celebration of the Pilipino community

  • Game 5: Lakers vs. Suns

May 27, 6p, Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA

When anyone hears the words “Los Angeles” and “sports” in the same sentence, one of the first things that come to mind are the Los Angeles Lakers. The purple and gold indirectly define the lifestyle that Angelenos live life on a daily basis: flashy, confident, and efficient. Game 5 will be played in the Staples center on May 27. Lakers tickets are some of the most sought after in the nation, as many celebrities come through to watch and to be watched, making the game more than just a sports event.

  • This is MY town: Dodgertown Philippines

June 9, 7p, Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA

In an effort to recognize their diverse compilation of fans, the Los Angeles Dodgers host days themed to celebrate one of the large amount of ethnic backgrounds that make up the city of Los Angeles. On this day they have chosen to celebrate the Philippine heritage by hosting Dodgertown Philippines. Philippine themed food including adobo will be served, and seating will be exceptionally close to the baseball diamond as the Dodgers take on the St. Louis Cardinals.

Meanwhile, in nationwide news in the world of sports:

In the NBA the championship Finals are starting to take shape as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are currently holding series leads over their opponents and appear to be the front runners to play for another title. This will be a legendary match up if this does materialize, as the Lakers and the Celtics are the two most storied franchises in NBA history, and this potential finals matchup would only add another chapter in their legendary rivalry.

In hockey, the prestigious Stanley Cup is the pinnacle of the NHL, who are currently running their conference finals as well. The Chicago Blackhawks have clinched their berth in the championship series and the Philadelphia Flyers appear to be their opponents unless our neighbors from the north, the Montreal Canadians can pull off a rare feat and come back from 3-1 deficit in the series and win outright.

There are many events that are happening right now in the sunny section of Southern California and what better way to enjoy the end of spring and beginning of summer by checking one of these events out.
