Longanisa, eggs, and rice; a cup orange juice; and a laptop loaded up to BakitWhy.com's newly minted 3.0 version. Not a bad morning if you ask me. As summer draws to a close and fall is starting to creep forward, let's take a quick look into the world of Pilipino-American sports and see what's been going on the past few days.
-August has been a busy month for mixed martial artist rising star Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz. He took part in the co main-event for UFC's "UFC on Versus 2" held in Southern California, in San Diego on August 1. After 3 rounds of takedown attempts and well timed punches, Munoz garnered a heartbreaking split decision loss to veteran international superstar Yushin “Thunder” Okami. There was no time to rest though as Munoz cornered Anderson Silva in his championship fight against Chael Sonnen on August 7. Afterwards, he headed back to his home gym, Reign, located in Lake Forest, CA to manage all of the intricacies of his own MMA event that he held in his training center this weekend. More than 10 fights were held that showcased the homegrown up-and-coming talent Southern California has to offer, and well known MMA fighters such as Strikeforce heavyweight champion Fabrecio Werdum and Krystof “The Polish Experiment” Sosynski were cageside to watch the event live.
-Congressional hearings and the never ending duty to his country is not going to stop the Pound-for-Pound king, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao from training for his next fight in November. Although the highly anticipated bout between himself and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. has been put on hold (at least until 2011), Pacquiao will square off against top tier pugilist Antonio Margarito, in a fight that will hold fans over until the mega blockbuster bout takes place. Pacquiao announced that he will utilize the resources in his native country of the Philippines, not his usual “Wildcard” training center in Los Angeles, CA, as his training base for the next fight. In between meetings and public gatherings, Pacquiao will manage his time to get ready for his next fight which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
-“The Freak” Tim Lincecum is slowly losing his grasp on winning a historic 3rd straight Cy Young award as the best pitcher of Major League Baseball. In his most recent outing last Tuesday, Lincecum was lit up for 6 run in only 4 innings of work en route to a 8-6 loss to the inferior Chicago Cubs. Tim didn't fare much better yesterday, getting pulled in the 4th inning after a loss for the San Francisco Giants. Tim dropped his record to 11-7 on the year and pushed himself further away from Cy Young considerations despite leading the league in strikeouts. The effects of his newly structured contract and early dominance are starting to get to Lincecum, as opposing teams seem to finally understand the Giants ace and his pitching mentality.
