Local “P.O.W.E.R.” Unite For Philippine Typhoon Relief

Benefit concert at the Pilipino-American Community Center for Ondoy Relief

Fresno, CA – The “P.O.W.E.R.” (Pilipino Organizations Working for Emergency Relief) benefit event, hosted by “Magkaisa”, the Pilipino-American student group at Fresno State, along with the Pilipino-American student group of Buchanan High School, will take place on Sunday, October 18, 2009 from 1-5pm at the Pilipino-American Community Center.

“Magkaisa” and the Pilipino-American student group of Buchanan High School have taken the lead in creating and hosting “P.O.W.E.R.” to show a united call to action in contributing to the relief efforts in the Philippines.

The event will provide the public a chance to donate towards the relief effort as well experience food from local Pilipino restaurants, merchandise, and entertainment. All donations accepted will be sent to the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) and Ateneo Task Force – Ondoy Relief.

Local leaders such as Dr. Lou Artacho (president of the Filipino American Association of Fresno and Vicinity), Florisse Raypon (KSEE 24 Portraits of Success Asian American Community Honoree), and Neil Gibson (former AS Student Body President at Fresno State, now a U.S. Diplomat working at the U.S. Embassy in Manila) as well as Robin Lopez (former San Joaquin Memorial basketball player, now center for the Phoenix Suns) have expressed their support for the event.

To date, the monetary amount of damage that Typhoon Ketsana and Parma has caused in The Philippines is upwards of $265 million, or PhP 12.4 billion. The typhoons have affected more than 5 million people in The Philippines and have caused 365 casualties.
