What do you get when you charity with some of the biggest names in the Pil-Am hip-hop scene? You get a night of incredible music for an even greater cause.

On June 4th, 2009, Bagong Kulurang Pinoy New York hosted a charity event entitled Lyrics for Literacy at Nightingale Lounge in New York City. The concert featured talents such as DJ Fat Fingaz (as guest DJ), Kevin Nadal, The Crowd, Deep Foundation, Kiwi and Bambu.

The Crowd opened up the night with an eclectic set that fused hip-hop/r&b/pop melodies over soul vocals and an accompanying guitar.

Nadal’s comedic routine helped add some humor to the show and gave the audience a memorable performance worthy of many laughs. He also read a passage from his upcoming book entitled “Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice”, which is scheduled to be released on June 25th.

Deep Foundation came on stage and gave the crowd a high-energy set, which can only be characterized as “true East Coast hip-hop”. The boys also performed their single “Children of the Sun”, accompanied by fellow rapper Hydroponikz.

Bambu and Kiwi, the California based rappers were in New York City for the Philippine Independence Day parade and festival as well as PNOY Apparel’s Shirt the Kids Showcase that weekend, and were late additions to the event. Bambu closed out the show with a short set that he indicated “was a very small preview for the Shirt the Kids that followed days later”.

Overall, it was a great night with great music, performers and a crowd that came from Missouri, Texas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. One of the notable guests included YouTube singer Erika David.
