A Tour of Manila, Philippines in the 1930s. Footage from this film is available for licensing from www.globalimageworks.com

My dad sent me an email today, forwarded from one of his friends:

"This was Manila before American forces carpet bombed & shelled the city to liberate it from the Japanese occupation forces.

An estimated 100,000 filipino civilians died placing it second only to Stalingrad in civilian causalties during WWII. That's about 25% of the population.

Both American & Japanese forces inflicted more damage to Manila than Hitler's Luftwaffe did to London.

In the aftermath, Manila was the most devastated city in the Far East.

We never read or studied about this in school because Zaide never wrote about it in our history books. Zaide was the author of our history books in the 60's & 70's"
