Among the qualities that define Pilipinos and Pilipinos-Americans is our sense of humor – our innate ability to poke fun of those around us. I came across this video on the comedy video website Funny or Die. It’s a spoof of a music video about the multi-talented Pilipino Icon, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, who shares his dreams outside of the ring in "Sometimes When I Punch." This of course is set to Pacman's hit duet with singer-songwriter Dan Hil, "Sometimes When We Touch", which reached number 19 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary top 20 list.
-Sometimes When I Punch-
I am the world’s best Fighter, the greatest Pound-for-pound.
From Vegas to Manila, I knock out every Round.
But actually I’ll tell you, I’m kind of getting bored.
When I am boxing in the ring, I dream of doing more.
Sometimes when I punch, my brain goes out to lunch,
and I imagine myself leaping on the moon.
Or riding on a white tiger, in downtown Paris, France.
Drink some wine and watch that tiger dance.
And there is so much more, please join me in my dreams.
I win a chili cook-off, and can lift a Cadillac.
Star in the remake of the Birds, and invent my own Jet Pack.
I dream of being a Pirate, command six of seven seas.
Or win thousands of dollars, on the game show Jeopardy.
Let’s make it a Daily Double, Alex
Sometimes when I punch, my brain goes out to lunch,
and I imagine myself jet-skiing on the sun.
Or building my own rollercoaster, that will go straight to the depths of hell,
and ends up in Philadelphia next to the Liberty Bell.
Sometimes I am a gargoyle, protect the while city.
Sometimes I go to the Apollo, and do my Def Jam Comedy
Ever Notice how White People Eat Rice?
Sometimes when I punch, my brain goes out to lunch,
and I find myself wrestling with a star.
Or straight up dunking on Kareem, I’m talking plastic-goggle Kareem.
I wish these all were true, but I know this is all a dream.
It is just a dream.
