With the 4th of July weekend coming to a close, I thought it would be fitting to end it with a story that encapsulates many of the values that America has come to stand for since its day of Independence – which includes equality, attaining the American Dream, work ethic, and the embracing of ethnic diversity. In regards to how our own Pilipino community fits into that whole scheme of things, I could find no better story as timely as that of 20-year-old Pilipino migrant, Luigi Seno's, who just recently made strides in achieving his own personal American Dream on the popular television show, America's Got Talent.
According to his personal website, Luigi originally came from Cebu, but moved with his family to Southern California in 2001 to escape the struggles they faced while living in the Philippines. He is 20 years old and is currently a music major at San Bernardino Valley College. If his recent showing on America's Got Talent is any indication, it certainly seems like he picked just the right major to be studying.
As timidly and shyly as Luigi first appeared when he stepped up to face the judges and the massive crowd on set, they all eventually gave way to the natural charisma and confidence he displayed once he began strumming his guitar and singing that one Maroon 5 song that seems to get everyone famous these days (i.e. Andrew Garcia).
Like many Pilipino artists who have recently found success in America (i.e. Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco), Luigi and his family show the same touching humility and appreciation of the moment towards the end of the video - which truly encapsulate their collective pride for their own country and people. Add Luigi to the ever-growing number of aspiring Pilipino artists who are just as proud of displaying their national heritage as they are of displaying their natural, God-given talents.
Happy 4th of July, and may each and every one of you continue on your journeys to your respective American Dream with the same hope, vivacity, and humility that Luigi has displayed.
Mabuhay! Oh wait...that's not American.
