Pinays in the Arts Showcase - The Love Movement

Article by
March 25, 2009

March celebrated the life of women all around the world through experiences, talents, and stories. However, before we close out Womens [HER]story month, I'd like to spotlight one more story. Beautiful, talented, hardworking, and most importantly strong - these are just some words to describe the every day Pinay...this is HER story.

The Love Movement Pinays in the Arts Showcase, was hosted by the lovely ladies of Kappa Psi Epsilon - Beta Chapter of San Francisco State University on Friday, March 13th at SFSU. Celebrating 10 years of sisterhood, the Sisters of Kappa Psi Epislon SFSU have continued to promote and explore a better understanding of the past, present, and future of the Pinay experience.

Joaquin Interviews Kappa Psi Espsilon about the Love Movement show

Like always, the Pinays in the Arts Showcase, The Love Movement, highlighted Pinays in the Arts through song, spoken word, comedy, and even fashion. As many Pilipinos might agree, Pilipino parents are not always - almost never - supportive of their kids majoring in the arts. For some reason, there are many misconceptions of why it is not a stable career to go into, more so now because of the economic crisis. However, this event truly brings out the beauty and the passion that these ladies share in the arts. Not all Pinays are destined to be our next future doctors or scientist, but possibly be our next Maya Angelou or Charice Pempengco. Celebrating the creativity that these young women have and sharing it with the community is something to embrace and love.

The line up ranged from Bay Area's own April Chase - a five-piece band that proves Pinays can rock out in style, Reina Aguiao - a Kappa Psi Espilon sister who's voice is just as big as her talent, and DJ Bev - a Pinay who stays true to her "Club Famous DJ Champion" title. Other performers included Ruby Ching, Lily Alunana & Band, Aureen Almario, Nicole Maxali, Audiology, Mind Me Clothing & Foldenic, Kayla Salminao, and BakitWhy regular MissCarolinexoxo.

We should ask ourselves, how are Pinays portrayed in the media? Are Pinays even being represented? Are there stereotypes affecting young Pinays growing up? If so, what are the struggles that these Pinays have to overcome each day?

Continuing to support events like the Love Movement, supporting Pil-Am organizations, and continuing to embrace the Pilipin@ culture in our communities, we can slowly move to progressively correct the misrepresentation of Pilipinos in [HER]story and [HIS]story through ourselves in our lives.

Knowledge if power - no history, no self, know history, know self.
