As Catherine posted last week, October is not only Pilipino American Heritage Month but National Breast Cancer Awareness Month as well. The 10th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival is playing a film that ties in both.

100 - directed by Chris Martinez (writer, Caregiver) and starring Mylene Dizon (Rome and Juliet, Calvento Files: The Movie) - is a film about Joyce De Leon, a 30-something executive in the Philippines who finds out she has terminal breast cancer and has six months to live. She responds by writing down all of the things she wants to do before she dies on 100 Post-It notes, which range from light-hearted whims like getting pampered at the spa to serious tasks like telling her mother the terrible news.

Though classified as a drama, 100 has splashes of humor that incite laughter from the audience without detracting from the seriousness of the issues that this film raises. As Catherine wrote, Pilipina Americans having the highest death rate from breast cancer than any other Asian American group. Prevention is the key to decreasing these rates: spread the word on breast cancer self-exams.

The San Diego Asian Film Festival is screening 100 as part of their goal to raise awareness about breast cancer. The film is being screened at the UltraStar Theater at the Hazard Center, Mission Valley on:

Saturday, October 17th @ 2:15p

Thursday, October 29th @ 7:15p

Director Chris Martinez is scheduled to attend the October 17th screening. 100 won the Audience Award at the Pusan International Film Festival, the Emile Guimet Award at the Vesoul Asian Film Festival, and the Audience Award, Best Director, and Best Screenplay Awards at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.
