After returning from the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant in Sao Paolo, Brazil, third runner-up, Shamcey Supsup, took a two-day stop in Los Angeles prior to her homecoming to Manila on Sunday, 9/18. The Miss Philippines beauty was welcomed by family, friends, and select media at The Americana in Glendale, California Thursday evening. The private dinner and meet & greet was sponsored by Goldilocks, Island Pacific Supermarket, Fiesta Fastfood, and DJ Angelo of Biozounds.
As Shamcey entered the press junket, her fatigue was not apparent. Although she mentioned how non-stop her past few days were, her gratitude and excitement seemed to bring about a calming effect. Her mother, Marcelina Gurrea-Supsup, accompanied her. When asked about the origins of Shamcey’s name, she responded that it came from her readings of Mills & Boon romance novels. “May mga Shamrock. I just got it from there. There’s no meaning.”
Shamcey was asked about her reaction to making the Top 5, and she responded, “I didn’t expect even to be in top 16. Even my co-candidates were shocked. I was just having fun, making friends throughout the whole competition.”
The reigning 2011 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe expressed the importance of her family and friends through this journey, and how much she misses being home in the Philippines. The General Santos City native expressed, “Hanging out with my friends. We usually spend overnight sa bahay (at home). Yung mga kaibigan ko ka simula. First year college. (With my friends who I’ve known since First Year of college) Until now they’re still my friends. And we’ve had a lot of experiences together. To spend time with them would be one thing I want to do when I get home.”
Shamcey also responded to questions about her entering showbiz in the Philippines and whom she’d potentially like to work with; “I’m not sure if I’m going to enter showbiz at all, but an actor that I admire would be Piolo Pascual. But a lot of people admire Piolo. I have no background in acting or theater. Bianca Gonzales, I admire her. And a male host, Derek Ramsay.” Previous beauty queens such as Bb. Pilipinas 2009 winner Bianca Manalo and Bb. Pilipinas 2010 and Miss Universe 2010 4th runner-up Venus Raj both entered showbiz as hosts/actresses post-pageantry.
Education and work are very important to the 25-year-old. She said, “At first I wanted to be a civil engineer, because mom is an engineer. But since I was already into painting and drawing as a hobby, my mother wanted me to take up fine arts in college, so I thought, why not go into architecture?” In school, she studied hard and enjoyed reading books. She was a valedictorian of her grade school batch, and was salutatorian of her high school batch at Makati High School. Shamcey graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. Shamcey is also a licensed architect who topped the Architecture Licensure Examination in July 2010 in the Philippines. During the Miss Universe pageant, Shamcey expressed in her video package;“I see myself in the future as an architect, building my own firm, and creating beautiful, sustainable structures that Filipinos can be proud of. Aside from that, I’m looking forward to teaching so I’m really looking forward to honing young minds and preparing them for the future.”
During the reception, guests and media were treated to a serenade by the cast of “The Romance of Magno Rubio” (Ang Romansa Ni Magno Rubio). The Los Angeles revival of Lonnie Carter’s adaptation of Carlos Bulosan’s short story, will open the coming season of the [Inside] the Ford series at the John Anson Ford Theatre in Hollywood, CA. The show will have a Nov. 4 – Dec. 11 run in LA, and is directed by Bernardo Bernardo, who acted in a 2004 production of “Magno Rubio” by Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theatre.
Shamcey Supsup, reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, won third runner-up in the 60th Miss Universe pageant held Monday night (Tuesday morning in Manila) at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paolo, Brazil wherein Angola’s Leila Lopes took the crown. Shamcey was welcomed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) by a courtesy call with President Noynoy Aquino just before PNoy flew out to the US to attend an international conference with other world leaders in New York. Afterwards, she was feted with a red carpet ceremony and ticker-tape parade for bringing honor to the Philippines and to Pilipinos worldwide.
