Sto. Niño/Sinulog in San Antonio, Texas (With Special Guest, Gabe Bondoc)

June 3, 2009

Filipino American FestivalBack home in the Philippines, Cebu to be specific, there is a festival that celebrates the transition of the indigenous, pagan way of life to Christianity. Many of us know that that Philippines is a land of many cultures, and is due to the fact that many foreigners came to explore and conquer the islands. With the arrival of the Spanish, Magellan claimed the Philippines in the name of the King of Spain. Magellan left the Santo Niño, known as Jesus in child form, as a baptismal gift to Queen Juana. The gift resulted in Queen Juana rejoicing and dancing. The rest of the natives followed her actions, thus, Sinulog is the name given.

Here in San Antonio, Texas, Sto. Niño Church holds a festival every May to commemorate the event, much like in Cebu (occurs in January). This event encompasses much meaning and provides an opportunity to learn more about Pilipino culture. Special guest, Gabe Bondoc, was there to celebrate and to perform. In the interview, he tells how Pilipino culture has influenced him. Check the video out!
