Well it's that time again folks; it's Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN) Season! That means Pilipino Organizations all over Southern California are preparing to showcase their talents and pride for our Pilipino American culture in ways that incorporate Cultural Dancing, Modern Dancing, an Original Script, and Original Songs.
PCN Season not only commemorates the tradition that each organization has deeply regarded, but it's also a culmination of the hard work, determination, and extreme talent that our Pilipino American College students have produced.
Last Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Loyola Marymount University, “Isang Bansa” showcased their 19th Annual PCN, "Living in the Shadows." The production was well balanced with a great story line, original songs written by their script writers, impressive cultural dancing, and overall embodied the multi-dimensional experiences we Pilipinos have.
Isang Bansa's Script Writers, Yvette Aranas, Sapphire Sandalo, and Antoinette Ochoa, wrote a 3-Act story that were essentially separate vignettes that built upon each other. The story involves 2 friends that visit the Philippines for 2 separate reasons, and surprisingly find that their paths crossed in more ways than they thought. This exciting story has twists and turns, and genuine humor that kept the audience engaged and compelled. This story sheds light on one of the major issues in the Philippines that affects the rest of the world; Human Sex Trafficking. In partnership with AFFIRM, the newly named Gabriela Network, a portion of the ticket sales are being given to the Purple Rose Campaign, an international mass campaign aimed at expressing and creating a ground swell of opposition to capital's assault on the bodies of women and children.
Isang Bansa has proven that the story of our people can be told from many angles, and they've successfully brought to light the issues of human sex-trafficking, family dynamics, and respect for our culture.
Throwing in talented dancers, singers, and actors, and we've started the PCN Season off right!
