SAGALA: “Don’t Be A Drag, Just Be A Queen”

LOS ANGELES, CA - Be a Queen with Barangay Los Angeles as we present our 1st annual “Sagala at L.A. Pride” on June 12, 2011. This is your chance to shine out of thousands in attendance as we celebrate Y.O.U. (Your Outstanding Unique-ness)!  “Whether you’re broke or evergreen/ You’re black, white, beige, chola descent/ You’re Lebanese, you’re orient”, you’re invited to join us in celebrating who we are as a community.

Sagala is a traditional Filipino parade of beauty queens. These amazing individuals consist of people in the community, chosen by the community to be part of the elaborate celebrations during Flores de Mayo. Even more than being chosen to be one of the few people to be a beauty queen is being gowned in an extravagant dress, sometimes even more elaborate and extravagant than the whole festival itself! You have the opportunity to be the Queen of Queens, the one and only Reyna Elena, at LA Pride with Barangay LA. “Don’t hide yourself in regret/ Just love yourself and you’re set” and show the crowd who you were born to be by marching your Sagala dress at LA Pride!

To be considered as part of our royal entourage, simply start by submitting an original image of your proposed dress drawing to Adrian Songcuan at asongcuan@barangayLA.org. In the subject heading of the email, please write “Sagala entry: (Your Name).” In the body of the email include: 1) your name, 2) a brief description of the design, 3) why you want the dress design to part of the Sagala and 4) the attached image file of the dress. Entries are open to everyone. Participants must have the capacity to attend LA Pride on June 12, 2011. One submission per person, please. Designs have to be in color and the image has to be clear. Already have the dress made? Submit that too! Have a question about the process, send an email and we’ll have an answer for you. Once the design is chosen to be part of our Barangay LA royal entourage, the original dress submission may not be changed dramatically to be the final dress to present at LA Pride.

Submissions will be accepted from contestants on Friday May 13, 2011 to Thursday May 19, 2011 (11:59PM). Please take note that Barangay LA will use Facebook to facilitate the selection process of our Sagala royal entourage. Facebook users will need to see a clear image of the dress design when submitting your dress proposal. So make it clear, creative and Y.O.U.! A confirmation email will be sent to the sender, which will validate that your entry has been received. We will contact you if any clarifications need to be made. Barangay LA will then compile the images into a special Sagala photo album on our Facebook Fan page, facebook.com/barangay.

Once all submissions have been received on Thursday May 19, 2011 (11:59PM) the voting process shall begin on Friday May 20, 2011 to Sunday May 22, 2011 (11:59PM). A “LIKE” will count as a vote toward the image. Facebook users may “LIKE” as many images as they wish.

The top six (6) submissions that receive the most votes will progress to a final voting process by the Board of Directors of Barangay LA. The final vote will be based on the traditional Sagala dresses, and the contemporary way it is interpreted for LA Pride. The winner will then be named Barangay LA’s Reyna Elena.

In order for Barangay LA to represent the colors of the pride flag, Reyna Elena will have the first pick of the final dominant color of the dress. Court queens will have the selection of the final dominant color of their dress in descending hierarchy order designated by Barangay LA’s Board of Directors. The remaining five (5) contestants will be appointed to Reyna Elena’s court.

The winner and royal entourage will be contacted via email by Monday May 23, 2011

The selected queens will have exactly three (3) weeks to complete their dress, if it hasn’t been made already, for the LA Pride parade on June 12, 2011. Barangay LA reserves the right to request updates on a dress to ensure a finished dress is ready for the LA Pride parade. If the dress is determined to be incomplete near before the LA Pride parade date, Barangay LA BOD will determine a course of action for alternate solutions.

Questions about dress submission, Barangay LA’s involvement at LA Pride and/or volunteering with Barangay LA may be sent to Adrian Songcuan via asongcuan@barangayLA.org.
