The Master Cleanse: Does it work?

Two years ago, my coach put me on an 8 week strict diet where I dropped 30lbs. Easiest thing I had ever done. Before I started that diet I had to cleanse. He tried to convince me to do the Master Cleanse but after he described what it was…I said, “No way! I’m not doing that. It doesn’t even sound like it tastes good!”

Fast-forward to July 1st, 2010…I finally decided to try it. I had a heart to heart talk with my good friend Tim aka DJ Turbulence who just finished doing the cleanse for 15 days. “I needed to clean out my system. I had a lot of energy and I feel good. I dropped 15 lbs. You can do this. It’s easy. Just stay strong and you’ll love the results.” With that being I said, I decided to start right after I got back from vacation.

The cleanse has 4 ingredients:

2 tablespoons fresh squeezed Lemon Juice

2 tablespoons organic Grade B Maple Syrup (not the commercial maple syrup you use on pancakes)

2 pinches Cayenne Pepper

10oz Purified Water

Drink 6-10 glasses a day

Take a laxative everyday or do the salt water flush in the morning

They say the first 3 days is the hardest and that most people fail between day 1 and 2. For me? The first 3 days was the easiest. It got really hard towards the end, days 8 to 12. For most people who stick with the cleanse, they have an increase in energy but I was the opposite. I became really weak the last 6 days of the cleanse. I know it’s because I didn’t drink 6-10 glasses a day. I maybe drank 5 a day. I didn’t do it on purpose though! I just didn’t have an appetite. But if you are planning on doing the cleanse, my advice is to drink the amount recommended to get full results.

I know this whole thing sounds crazy but this cleanse has been around forever. Some do it to lose weight. Others do it to get rid of all the toxins in the body. Not only have I joined the elite group of people who have conquered this cleanse but I join a group of celebrities who have done it as well.

Most known for the doing the MC is Beyonce. She went on the cleanse to shed 20 lbs for her role in Dreamgirls. "I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying." She quickly put the weight back on after her movie wrapped. Yes, this can be considered a crash diet. But if you stick with it, change your eating habits and exercise regularly, the weight will stay off.

Most recently, power couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore has joined the MC wagon. Although Demi insists it’s not for weight loss. She tweets, “2nd day of master cleanse and off to hike with hubby and the dogs. 2nd day better than the 1st!” but her hubby Ashton may not have been on the same boat. He tweets, “9 hrs into the master cleanse. I want a steak, a beer, and a blow-pop. Hmmm this is gonna be rough.” For the most part, the cleanse doesn’t work unless you are 100% committed on reaching your set goal. Motivation is key and if you have the right mind set, you’ll finish with flying colors. And you’ll feel awesome. It’s a great way to start over and live a healthy lifestyle. I did it. You can too!
