He started off singing one 'Sunday Morning', then immediately went Straight Up from there, but he’s since lost some footing and is now trying to regain the swagger we all know he possesses. Yes, I’m talking about American Idol’s raspy swooner, Andrew Garcia. Or as many people already previously know him as - YouTube’s Andrew Garcia, or AJ Rafael’s amazingly talented singer-friend, Andrew Garcia. These days, however, he’s trying to make a name for himself all on his own.

The Philippines is a nation of strong women. Each and every day, Pinays have a hand in running households, businesses, government agencies, and even the entire country itself.

In the PI, the celebration of this year’s National Women’s Month (March) and International Women’s Day (March 8th) are centered on the theme “Babae, Tagumpay Ka ng Bayan!” (Woman, you’re the Success of the Country!)

Uso pa ba ang Ligawan?
(Is courtship still being practiced?)

When I was trying to research a clear cut definition of “ligawan,” which is the tagalog word for traditional Pilipino courtship, I came across a completely different word. I found “lugawan,” a fast food place that serves “lugaw,” or rice porridge.  I don’t know how this is related to my topic, but I just find it funny.  And all of a sudden I became hungry.

The research wasn’t that easy.  I had to really dig deep to get a formal definition of “ligawan.”  I don’t know if this sends me a sign that the traditional Pilipino courtship isn’t happening anymore, especially if you are a Pilipino who hasn’t been living in the Philippines for quite a while, or at all.  Or is the art of courtship really dead in this fast paced, internet generation?

Born Edgardo Jose Martin Santiago Valenciano to a Puerto Rican mother and a Pilipino father, singer/songwriter/musician/actor Gary Valenciano or Gary V has consistently kept himself in the public’s eye since 1983 when he first burst into the Philippine music scene. He started out as a lean and lanky 18-year old who had all of Michael Jackson’s moves and Al Jarreau’s vocal pyrotechnics down pat, and now, his career is the yardstick by which other Pilipino artists measure theirs. The magnitude of his achievements and accolades defies belief, considering that Gary has been battling juvenile diabetes for 30 years running. Living each day’s moments according to the rise and fall of his blood sugar level has not prevented Gary V from earning the nickname of Mr. Pure Energy from his legions of (mostly Pilipino) fans worldwide.

Hello there!

Liz DizonLiz DizonI'm not great with words, but I did take some photos when I got the chance to go to the PI for the first time at the end of 2008. It was truly a life-changing experience; I had no idea how much I had, and I had no way to appreciate how much my parents gave me, until I saw where they came from.

Summer 2009 vacation to the homeland.

After a long two hour drive we arrived at a hidden beach in Ilocos Norte. This is me with my two sisters, ready to hit the beach. The water was crystal clear, the sand was white and soft, and the whole scenery was just picture perfect.

Hi! My name is Bien-Elize Roque and I learned about this opportunity to share my experiences in the Philippines through BakitWhy.com. I went to the Philippines last year for 3 months to do some volunteer work, and Typhoon Ondoy happened while I was there. I ended up being able to volunteer, and was able to help put up a group that helped the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. The attached is my account of how it had been while I was there and the pictures are from some of the things we did.
