Summertime, summertime! Well, it doesn't really look like summertime here in Southern California, but nevertheless the mentality is still there. What better way to relax today than with a Sunday special JM's BBM. As I mentioned last week, I'll give a quick snapshot of my time at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and a crash course into the world of poker, but let's see what the past week has brought to the table in the world of sports.

BBM’s are reprogrammed and ready to go! To all the regular readers out there that noticed I was gone, JM's BBM's are back after about a monthlong layoff. To make a long story short, I've been dividing my time between work during the week and Las Vegas on the weekends for the World Series of Poker, which I'll document at a later post. Needless to say, time has been in short supply, but as the Series closes I'm finding the time to knock out these weekly posts once again. Let's dive right in to see what's going on in the world of Pil-Ams in sports.

At the start of the summer months, the power of the letter “P” has taken over the sports world. Playoffs, punishment, and poker are all taking center stage in the nation this weekend. World championships and bragging rights will be on the line as teams and individuals set themselves up a chance to win a trophy with their beloved teammates or a shiny gold bracelet to signify their psychological and intellectual dominance over their opponents.

This week's theme in sports is celebrating the champion. In the Philippines, international sports icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao ran for a seat in the Philippine congress. Rising star UFC fighter Mark "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" Munoz will be honored as one of the newest members of the California State Wrestling Hall of Fame. The Conference finals for the NBA have been set for both the East and West and within a couple weeks we will have 2 teams square off to win the coveted Larry O Brien trophy. Let's get a little more in depth into each of these main stories as we are almost halfway through the year 2010.

Tim LincecumTim LincecumAfter a quiet couple of weeks, many of our Pilipino athletes have garnered nationwide attention again. Superstars such as and Manny Pacquiao have been trending topics in the sports world, speaking about their recent performance and what is next for them. The entire world is also witnessing the NBA playoffs as we are deep into the conference semi-final series. Here's a quick recap of the events of the past week.

Everyone is a fan of the underdog story, which is such a common yet compelling topic in the sports world. Many people are a fan of every team that are not the Lakers or the Yankees. They want to see the New England Patriots lose in the Super Bowl, and watch Sidney Crosby choke on the deciding penalty shot. Longshots such as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Philadelphia 76ers of the early 2000’s garner fans who long for a chance to witness Goliath fall to David.

This Saturday, another underdog comes into play as everyone’s “favorite” boxer, Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. squares off against Sugar” Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on May 1st at MGM’s Grand Garden arena.
