Thanksgiving marks a significant holiday in U.S. culture, so it would behoove us to be informed of its origins, especially given that we (as a nation) spend so much money and energy on food, shopping, and marketing for this special day.

Why is it important to celebrate this day as a time of conviviality, family-centeredness, and peace?

Florida Panhandle Filipinos

Guest Contribution by Claire Ramos

On a global scale, Pilipinos make up one of the largest percentages of the world’s population. With that knowledge, it should come as no surprise that in my experience, no matter where I’ve lived or traveled, there were always other Pilipinos to be found in the community.

The Bathala Project BaybayinGuest Contribution by David Lazaro, The Bathala Project

The ability to read and to write is the mark of any civilization.  Thus, it should be no surprise that Spanish accounts reveal that when they first landed on the shores of the Philippine islands, the people of the land were already reading and writing to each other through their own script. The accounts even estimate that the native people of the Philippines may have been writing this script for over a century prior to the first Spanish steps on the beaches of Homonhon made by Magellan himself.  This script that seemingly every local was literate in including women and children was found to be called Baybayin.

Pilipino Filipino American Heritage MonthPilipino American Heritage Month was established by the Filipino American National Historical Society (FAHNS) to recognize the achievements, contributions, and the historical presence of Pilipinos in the United States. October was likely chosen because the first recorded presence of a Pilipino in the Continental United States was in October 1587.

FPACThe Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) was first conceptualized in 1990 as part of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department’s Festivals Program, an arts program that was designed to address the multicultural and multi-ethnic population of the city of Los Angeles.

The first FPAC took place at Los Angeles City College on Mother’s Day, May 14, 1992, and was organized by about 100 artists and community leaders. Roughly 3,000 participants braved the aftermath of the L.A. riots, which had occurred just the week prior to the affair. Since this seminal event, FPAC has grown stronger and bigger over the years; moving to Cabrillo Beach in 1994 before finally transitioning to its current location in Point Fermin Park, in the historic district of San Pedro back in 2001.

Pilipinos in New YorkIt is said that the beauty of New York lies in the fact that so many people are from some place else. Walk around and you’ll meet a bodega owner from Yemen, manicurist from Nepal, a fifth generation Italian American restaurateur, and a taxi driver from Nigeria . . . the list goes on and on.   In a place where one can get lost in its vibrant diversity, I set out to find the history, the voice, and the heartbeat of Pilipinos in New York and this is what I found.

Asian Pacific American Enclaves: Background of Filipinotowns Across America

According to Dictionary.com, an enclave can be defined as any small, distinct area or group enclosed or isolated within a larger one. What does this really mean? New immigrants and migrants usually settle into neighborhoods with others from their own cultural background, and sometimes others from their home provinces. There is a sense of belonging, and familiarity projected by an enclave while adapting to a new country. Although discrimination and racism have played roles in the creation of racial enclaves, they are not the only factors.  Another factor would be the Immigration Act of 1965, which widened the door for immigration from Asian countries like the Philippines. This act allowed a limit of 20,000 immigrants per year for each country in the Eastern hemisphere. For Pilipino immigrants, the assimilation process becomes much easier when they’ve established a sense of belonging in their enclave- enabling them to set their feet between two cultures.

The first 100-Days of recent presidencies have been a measure of how effective he will be. This 100-day standard for Presidents is credited to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. F.D.R. met with Congress for 100-days to institute new programs among other things to jump start the American ecomony after the Great Depression, and successfully brought about the change that was sought at the time from the American President. President Obama's 100-days ends on April 21, 2009. What will he achieve by then?
