I Don’t Watch Boxing, But I Watch Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao

by Philip Betz

My first actual viewing of a Pacquiao fight was with friends during his bout with Oscar De La Hoya last year. I’d seen snippets of boxing matches before but had never been impressed, so I entered my friend’s place anticipating a long, protracted and boring fight between men of whom I had no opinion either way. Sure, Pacquiao’s a Pilipino and I’m half, but that didn’t seem like enough to make me want to watch him and another guy do sports things on the television. Luckily pizza and beer were placed in front of me (my friends know me so well) so I stayed, expecting to be bored but at least fed. The former expectation was not met.

Christmas is just a few days away and while images of fir trees, stockings, snow, and Santa Claus typically dominate many people's collective perception of Christmas, it's always nice to remember how we as Pilipinos add our own unique flavor to this holiday that we appropriately like to call 'Pasko'. It's that time of the year for Pilipinos when the colorful and bright parols beautifully line the streets of Manila, when the Pilipino fiestas centered around food, singing, and dancing seem to happen every night, when church and spirituality play integral roles in everyone's sincere reflection of the holiday, and when our very own tagalog Christmas songs manage to effectively stir up just as much holiday spirit as their American counterparts.

Pacman vs. Money: Tale-of-the-TapePacman vs. Money: Tale-of-the-TapeFans worldwide have been begging for a mega fight between the   top two Pound-for-pound boxers - Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and Floyd “Money” Mayweather, for a while now; and a person with knowledge of the discussions has said that in the end, there was enough up-front money for both camps to agree to an equal split of the purse.

Pacman & Money will get $25 million each from the initial $50 million pot that has been pooled together to get both fighters to agree to what has been billed as potentially the richest fight in boxing history.

This is going to be an exciting fight,” Pacquiao said on Philippine national TV Friday, December 4th. “I want to fight Floyd Mayweather very badly. It’s the fight that everyone wants to see.”

tsud123Recently, I have had "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon stuck in my head. It's super catchy and hard to not to sing along to.  Some friends and I thought it would be fun to do a cover of this song a capella. It was very fun to arrange and just as fun to sing. I hope you enjoy our efforts! What other songs have been hard to get out of your head lately?

Florida Panhandle Filipinos

Guest Contribution by Claire Ramos

On a global scale, Pilipinos make up one of the largest percentages of the world’s population. With that knowledge, it should come as no surprise that in my experience, no matter where I’ve lived or traveled, there were always other Pilipinos to be found in the community.

The film "Brown Soup Thing" recently had a successful screening at the inaugural Filipino International Film Festival Los Angeles this past weekend (click here for what else played there), but the movie's premiere happened at the Chicago Filipino American Film Festival.  Now preparing for their 6th annual festival, it will take place in the historic Portage Theater from November 6-8, 2009, and they just announced their list of selections.  I also got the chance to talk with a former entrant to get his take on his experiences and what he wants to see come from the Pilipino film community.

AnoWhat Is The Philippine National Language?

What is the National Language of the Republic of the Philippines? What about the Official Language? Are they even the same?

Is it “Tagalog”? Is it “Pilipino”? Or is it, (BakitWhy’s policy of using “Pilipino” instead notwithstanding), in fact, “Filipino”?

Too many people, Pilipinos and Pilipino-Americans unfortunately included, are unable to differentiate between these three different languages, much less answer these questions with a high degree of certainty. The inter-relationships between “Tagalog”, “Pilipino”, and “Filipino” has led to many misunderstandings, including incorrectly assuming that these three are mutually interchangeable, which is oftentimes quite confusing for speakers and non-speakers alike.
