Los Angeles, CA – The headquarters of Search to Involve Pilipino-Americans (SIPA), in the Historic Filipinotown district of Los Angeles, became the intimate setting for Kabataang maka-Bayan’s (KmB, Pro-People Youth) Love for the People event on the evening of Thursday, February 18th. This occasion, coming on the heels of Valentine’s Day just this past Sunday, strives to break down the commercialized idea of love that has been perpetuated around what is often cynically referred to as a “Hallmark” holiday.

Close to 900 Pilipinos from the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) converged onto George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia for "Makinig II." "Makinig," meaning "to listen," was a show put on by GMU's Pilipino Cultural Association and the Asian Pacific American Council with donations and proceeds going to Gawad Kalinga's Operation GK: Walang Iwanan, which is aimed at providing relief efforts for those victimized by Typhoon Ondoy.

In the wake of Typhoon Ondoy and the uncertainties of rebuilding that lay ahead for the Philippines, many Pilipinos from across the world have been doing everything in their power to help comfort and ease mainland Pilipinos through this tumultuous time of transition that they all face. Many celebrities and people of authority, from the mainland and abroad, have stepped up their efforts of support by using their own influence and power to bring some light to many weary Pilipinos looking for the simplest reasons to smile and hope again.

There is a saying that bad things come in threes; and unfortunately, at least with regards to Tropical Typhoons in the Republic of the Philippines - this looks to be the case.

The Philippines is still recovering from the loss and devastation that Tropical Storm “Ondoy” (international codename: Ketsana), which triggered the worst flooding in Manila in over 40 years, and Super Typhoon “Pepeng” (international codename: Parma) wrought on the pacific archipelago in the past month. The two storms, which occurred within about a week of each other, killed 773 people and caused more than $7 million in damages.

Glendale , California – October, 2009 - “We Are One!”, a one-night only benefit concert to raise funds for typhoons Ondoy and Parma disaster relief in the Philippines, will be held on Thursday, October 22 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California beginning at 6:00pm.  Typhoon Ondoy violently struck Manila and portions of neighboring provinces on September 25 causing massive flooding and more devastation than Hurricane Katrina.  Hundreds of people have died with many more still missing and hundreds of thousands have been displaced by the destruction to homes and property.  Just last week, typhoon Parma devastated the mountain regions of Northern Luzon , causing landslides and additional flooding and adding to the on-going fatality count.

October 12, 2009 – Los Angeles, CA – A benefit concert on Saturday, October 24 at Café-Club Fais Do-Do in Los Angeles has been organized in response to the medical needs of victims of the late September-early October typhoons that struck the Philippines.

Entitled, A Flood Of Hope, the concert will feature soul/funk band Elson and the Soul Barkada, the powerpop band Random Ninjas and Kapoteng Bakal, a “supergroup” comprised of former members of various popular ‘80s and ‘90s rock bands from the Philippines. Additional acts are also slated to perform.

San Francisco, CA – Mahal Foundation, a 501c (3) non-profit organization based in San Francisco, has a very ambitious mission statement: To enrich the lives of all people living in poverty in the Philippines. The Philippines is 7,000 miles away but Mahal, or its English translation "love", knows no bounds. Mahal Foundation was founded by Del Augusta, when a trip to the Philippines ignited a zealous dedication to support the millions of Filipinos living in poverty.

“Magkaisa” and the Pilipino-American student group of Buchanan High School have taken the lead in creating and hosting “P.O.W.E.R.” to show a united call to action in contributing to the relief efforts in the Philippines.
