The colonies are hostile this Saturday! Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto (representing Puerto Rico) will bout it out for WBO Welterweight supremacy. Moving up from 140 to 147 pounds, Pacquiao will once again be tested as he gains bulk, which is always a liability in terms of speed and power.

Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American/ Pacific Islander population in the United States and they are projected to become the largest Asian American population by 2010. With 1.37 million Filipino-born immigrants living in the US, Filipino Americans are the second largest immigrant population in the country.

As descendants of the Philippines, a country that was colonized by Spain for over three centuries and by the US for nearly 50 years, Filipino Americans are an ethnic group with a sociocultural and historical experience that is unlike any other. First, they are the only ethnic group that has been categorized as Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic.

Pilipinos have been put on the map of "firsts" once again thanks to Pilot Nathaniel Jordan S. Calvo -  the first Pilipino to fly the Airbus A380 under Emirates airline - who recently flew the world's largest jet! 37-year-old Calvo has been schooled in aerospace and mechanical engineering in both the Philippines and then in the United States, where he took flight lessons and ignited his passion and love for flying. Qualifying for such a feat requires having been selected to take an A380 transition training course designed by Airbus, the leading aircraft manufacturing company itself.

Presidential Election 2008: Immigration

With a little less than two weeks left before this year's historic election, an issue that seems to have been swept aside to make room for others is that of immigration. Even when it was mentioned, we heard very little about the issue unless it pertained to Mexico or Latino Americans and any immigrants who are on American soil in ways that the U.S. Government doesn't approve of.  Debates went on about amnesty periods, a faster application process, benefits for persons already here, securing borders to deter crossing illegally, etc. But, what does that mean for Pilipinos that want to come to the United States?

The Explosion of Pil-Ams in the United States

filaamflag.jpgBakitwhy primarily serves the Pilipino-American demographic, a potentially enormous force in the United States. Pilipino-Americans make up the third largest Asian group in the United States.  We span multiple locations, generations, and backgrounds; however, that diversity also makes it difficult to connect Pil-Ams nationally.  We hope that BakitWhy can serve to bring together our disparate communities across the United States in order facilitate discussion, cooperation, and create action in the Pil-Am population.
