Veterans Day of Valor

The “Day of Valor” and “Bataan Day” was recognized on Thursday, April 10th, for the Filipino Veterans who fought alongside with the Americans in WWII.  After sixty-three years, April 10th turned out to be the first official day where the Filipino Veterans can finally claim the money that was denied to them several times.  Although they will continue to fight for the military rights that they deserve, the Lolos were also recognized with San Francisco’s Mayor, Mayor Gavin Newsom, a huge supporter for the Filipino Veterans, in City hall. “The Filipinos must be the most patriotic and valiant group I’ve met,” says Mayor Newsom, “I have never seen any one put as much effort and heart into a cause.   I know the money you are receiving is not much today, but I will continue to support your endeavors.”  For many Lolos, the money does not matter as much anymore.  After sixty-three years, having their children petitioned is one issue they want to resolve, but most importantly, the Filipino Veterans  want to be recognized in the eyes of the U.S government.; and with Mayor Newsom giving the Lolo’s honor, they would not trade those spoken words for anything.

The President has finally passed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 -- commonly known to the masses as the Stimulus Bill. Included in the bill are provisions that would grant payment to Pilipino WWII Veterans who have been waiting some compensation for their service.

Approximately 8:30am, a little under four hours to the swearing in of the 44th President of the United States, authorities have announced that the National Mall is almost full. Crowds started to gather in around 4 am to fill the portion that is a two mile stretch from the Capitol building, where the President will be sworn in, past the Washington Monument and even to the Lincoln Memorial.

If you were tuned into the President Obama and Vice President Biden's inauguration today, there were many words of civic duty, tolerance, and national progress that held true to us not only Pilipino Americans, but also citizens of the world.  Hopefully you had the chance to catch history in the making here on the site (especially if news sites were blocked at your work...) or any other media outlet you could scrounge up this early morning.

Although we focus on Pilipino American lifestyles here on BakitWhy.com, you can't deny the core geekyness we share as Internet users.  The Web is rapidly progressing as a primary news source.  Check out the these statistics from the social networking/media site Mashable that detail just how much Web activity was going on during the inauguration.

Election 2008 can be called one of the most important and intense elections in United States history. It could also be deemed as one of the ugliest plebiscites where personal affiliations or vignettes have become the centerpieces of campaigns, when in fact it should ideally be about the issues. It is not unheard of that elections do get messy during the final stretch of the race, but this year marks history in the making with an African American pr

Presidential Election 2008: Immigration

With a little less than two weeks left before this year's historic election, an issue that seems to have been swept aside to make room for others is that of immigration. Even when it was mentioned, we heard very little about the issue unless it pertained to Mexico or Latino Americans and any immigrants who are on American soil in ways that the U.S. Government doesn't approve of.  Debates went on about amnesty periods, a faster application process, benefits for persons already here, securing borders to deter crossing illegally, etc. But, what does that mean for Pilipinos that want to come to the United States?

Here's some useful tips for those of you (hopefully all!) who plan to vote in the United States presidential elections  this coming November 4th. Remember, all issues affect Pilipino Americans as much or sometimes more than other groups in the United States. Look out for breakdowns of major election topics such as immigration, war, economy, etc. as they apply to Pil-Ams this month on BakitWhy.com.
