Kevin NadalWords by Edward J. Mallillin

Kevin Nadal will make history this Thursday, June 25 in New York City, where he will launch Filipino American Psychology: A Handbook of Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice, the first book of its kind, at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (7-9 PM, local time).

With an ancestry that includes three centuries of Spanish rule, 50 years of American occupation, and heavy migration to the United States, Nadal presents the first comprehensive look at the collective psyche of Pilipino Americans.  As the 2nd largest Asian American population in the United States (2.4 million), it's surprising that his studies are only the first to be published.

[ I was not able to attend the memorial for Al Robles, but my friend Alister was able to. This is a beautiful and touching story that Alister shared on his wordpress, that I now would like to share with all of you on BakitWhy.com ]

On May 02, 2009, community leader and poet Al Robles passed away. He had dedicated his life to working in benefit of the elderly, especially in the Filipino community. He was born and raised in the Fillmore District, but was a well-known and respected man all over San Francisco. His life had touched every generation and person who had been blessed to hear him speak. From his work with Manilatown and the I-Hotel to his “talk-stories” of oral history, he has inspired and educated many people. He will be missed.

Al RoblesOn May 2, 2009, Monong Al Robles passed away from complications during an illness. If you didn't know who Al Robles was, you've most likely have felt his presence within the Pilipino American Community. As an activist, poet, advocate, and community organizer, he was heavily involved in the I-Hotel Community and Kearny Street Workshop. Born and raised in San Francisco's Fillmore District, Al devoted his life to serve the needs of the Pilipino American and Elderly Community. He founded the Manilatown Senior Center in the 1980's and has inspired many as the poet laureate of the Pilipino Community.
