How I Met Your Nanay: An Untold and Unfinished Story

iBakitWhy Blog Post by gephine
February 15, 2011

My parents aren’t usually the kind to share romantic, sentimental stories like how they met or how they knew it was love or what they felt on their wedding day, so I knew that it was going to be difficult getting the story of how they met out of them.

And so it was.

I’m amazed that my mom didn’t avoid the question by saying that she was supposed to marry Tirso Cruz III. But, in true fashion, she told me a quick story and sent me on my merry way.

My parents first met in December 1979. My mom had just graduated from Arellano University and began her rural service (after graduating from college, students had to “work” for the government). On her third day at the hospital, she met my dad but “didn’t pay attention to him.” It wasn’t until she had to ask him for a prescription medication that they felt a spark; it was at this seemingly small, random moment that made my mom think, “He’s probably the one.”

Seven months later, my mom left for the U.S. and they talked through letters; and my dad wrote some pretty good letters and got creative too: writing messages using x-rays, sending pressed roses, and (whether or not he wants to admit it), my dad’s quite the letter writer (I don’t have any samples of his love letters nor would I want to share them since they’re personal, but I’ve received letters from him).

Being miles and miles apart didn’t have an effect on them; if anything, distance really did make the hearts grow fonder. And they weren’t the only ones to notice. At my parents’ 25th wedding anniversary, in 2007, a family friend shared a story of how her daughter was devastated when she found out my parents were getting married. She apparently said, “Tita Gloria CAN’T marry Tito Gabby! I’M gonna marry Tito Gabby!”

My parents got married in 1982: their civil union was on May 28 – my mom’s birthday – and their church wedding was on July 4.

Even though they didn’t tell me the whole story and even though they don’t usually share stories like this with my sisters and I, we see their love through little, simple moments. Like the following that happened at IHOP a few years ago.

Mom: Ay, the soup I ordered doesn’t taste good.
Dad: Here, let’s switch. You can have mine.
Mom: Why?
Dad: Because I love you.

Watch: my mom will read this blog and get mad at me for not telling the whole story.

But you know what my dad would say to that?

"Hindi pa tapos ang aming kuwento. (Our story isn't finished yet.)"

Picture above is from their honeymoon in Baguio City.

Thanksgiving is coming around in just a few days. I'm looking very forward to the turkey (or turducken?) and pancit palabok and more that will be on the dining table at my Tita's house. Looking forward to laughing and creating new memories with my cousins, sisters, nieces, and nephews. And even the photoshoot that will undoubtedly happen with my family.

But as we all know, Thanksgiving is - of course - a day to give thanks (though yes, we should give thanks everyday). This year, I have so much to be thankful for. And to keep this blog from being an extensive list, I'm gonna go monthly!

January

ManilaStar Events' PIN@YPALOOZA concert. Working with an amazing staff, awesome volunteers, and such talented artists like Melissa Polinar, AJ Rafael, Chris & Steven Cole, and more… I'll never forget this night (and the days that built up to it). It was such a rush running what went on behind the scenes, walking around with a walkie-talkie, hearing and seeing everyone scream when their favorite artists went on stage… it was such an amazing feeling knowing that I was part of a great team that helped bring 700+ people such happiness. Can't wait to do it again (February 5, 2011 - PIN@YPALOOZA 2011!)

February

February 23rd, 2010, I became a part of BakitWhy.com. I'm speechless and have no words for how blessed and thankful I am for being a part of this team. What also left me speechless was the compliment my mom's friend's gave me about my first article on BakitWhy, Pilipino History 101: The People Power Revolution, who was also President Corazon Aquino's speechwriter. He said, "I read the article and honestly found your writing quite impressive. You should keep writing. There is simplicity and rhythm in your prose that speak both to the heart and mind." Joining BakitWhy, writing an article about an important piece of Philippine history, and getting this compliment… I have to thank Fred, Trish, Kat, Kaywan, and Jer for letting me join BakitWhy!

March

Seeing Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, John Lloyd Cruz, Pokwang, Richard Poon, Be a Alonzo, Gerald Anderson, and Kim Chiu in concert. Or actually, maybe I should say becoming friends with Bboy Mangubat, who's helped open doors and opportunities for me since we met in November 2009. Salamat, Bboy, para sa lahat!! Palaging maging kaibigan tayo, ha?

April

Besides celebrating my five-year anniversary with my perfect other half, Jason Tran, on April 1st (yes, our anniversary is on April Fools Day), one of God's greatest blessings came into my life (and the lives of others) on April 23rd: my baby girl, my goddaughter Maileina Audrey. As my sister and I say, whenever you see her or carry her in your arms, it's like you're carrying the solution to world peace. She just puts you at ease, makes you laugh… just really the cutest thing in the world.

May

Many of my family and friends' birthdays are in May (August must've been a busy month), so I give thanks for all of them and the lives they've been blessed with :)

June

Meeting Sarah Geronimo and Erik Santos. Sure, they won't remember me, but don't you get giddy and feel blessed when you meet people who you think are quite amazing and talented? Yes, I do. (As you can tell by March and June, I'm a TFC fan. Yup yup!)

July

Getting a paid job! Not a big girl job yet, but at least something to help me out financially. Having a job in general is something to be thankful for regardless (though there may be a few exceptions…). Also, celebrating my 23rd birthday. Celebrating another birthday is always something to be thankful for too :). And getting my first DSLR! A Nikon D40 :)

August

I thank the parents of my family and friends who were born in May for deciding to have kids. Just kidding :) Hm, I can't think of anything for this month. I did see Maja Salvador in concert. I AM thankful for this month, I just can't think of anything!

September

I went on a special date with my boyfriend where we rode a hot air balloon and saw the Chicago sunset from it. Just a nice date in general, and I'm very thankful to have him in my life.

October

Seeing "Sa 'Yo Lamang." Maybe not too big of a thing to be thankful for, but I thought it was a very powerful movie that makes you thankful for family and life.

November

I'm hoping to fill this spot with good news I'm hoping to get soon… so check back for this one!

December

Secret ;) (no, talaga, it's a secret).

*A picture of part of one side of my family... not even half of us. We're a big family :)

25 Facts about FACT

25 Facts about FACT

Okay, so these aren't really hardcore facts about FACT. They're facts about what happened to me or my thoughts at FACT, the Filipino Americans Coming Together Conference at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign this past weekend.

I just like trying to have a play on words. Let's start backwards?

25. That's the number of Pilipinos opening keynote speaker Professor Rick Bonus thought would be at this Midwest conference.

His dialogue actually went like this:

"When they told me I was going to a Filipino conference in the Midwest, I thought, ‘Oh, so 25 people?’ I’m from California, okay? We didn’t know there’s Filipinos here."

This statement really touched me because I find it unfortunate that people in the West Coast (maybe even East Coast) can't believe there are actually Pilipinos here where the deer and the antelope play. It's probably because as I was growing up, I was always surrounded by Pilipinos and Pilipino culture: I went to the Seven Last Words Mass on Holy Thursday, I sang at every Pilipino party, my family was in a Pilipino association, we had TFC, I did cultural dances, and more. I was always aware that there were Pilipinos all over the world (not that West or East Coast Pilipinos don't think that). When I heard this statement, I thought in my mind, "C'mon, you really can't think there aren't any Pilipinos in the Midwest, can you?? Really?? (Hello, President Obama's Executive Chef comes from here ;)http://bakitwhy.com/articles/white-house-chef-criseta-comerford-be-honored-chef-year-chicago).

24. Something Dr. Kevin Nadal said in his "Filipino Psychology 101" workshop that stuck out with me was school. School, to Pilipinos, is very important. Whenever you talk to any family member, one of the first things they ask is, "How's school?" I told Dr. Nadal that one of my uncles always asks this, as if by ritual, whenever he calls us in Chicago; so much so that my sisters, cousins, and I have completed that ritual each time with, "Oh, it's good…" which is followed by my uncle saying, "That's good," then followed by an awkward silence that's broken with us saying, "So, you wanna talk to my mom?"

But anyway, that's not the point. What Dr. Nadal mentioned is that status is very important to us Pilipinos, whether it's with school or a job. This thought made me think of one of my titas who seems to be more concerned with school/job status than with how we're doing, how our relationships are going, and other things like that. Maybe she's not, but she always asks those kinds of questions first. And he mentioned how all that focus on status and competition is what leads us to stress and depression.

23. Dr. Nadal's workshop also opened my boyfriend's eyes to things about me and my culture. At dinner that night, he said to me, "Everything that he said… reminded me of you. And now I get you a little bit more now." He then said he wished there was a conference for Chinese people like this so I can understand him (if you know of any, let me know so I can tell him; I'm sure they exist somewhere!).

22. As some previous FACT coordinators advised in a previous article (http://bakitwhy.com/articles/making-most-your-pilipino-conference-experi...), have fun, party, and go to the afterset… but don't go to FACT (or any conference for that matter) *because* of the afterset. Since my first FACT in 2005, it really wasn't the afterset that was fun for me: learning and experiencing everything is really what sticks with me longer. It's always disheartening to me to see any student/delegate go to any conference just because there's an afterset and not realize how equally (if not more) fun and awesome the workshops are.

21. Speaking of fun, Chris and Marah Sotelo's intro FACT song to the tune of Beauty and the Beast's "Bonjour!" song was one of THE best things ever. As soon as there's a video on YouTube, you'll see it here!

20. And speaking of Chris, his Crazy Manny Fan video was super hilarious. Again, as soon as these videos go up on YouTube, the BakitWhy.com Midwest Team will share it with you ASAP!

19. Ho Chie Tsai's workshop about finding your passion was really good and one of those things that made me realize as confused and maybe here-and-there as I may think I am, I'm actually on the right path. He taught us a little history on Asians, shared with us encouraging words and videos from Asian artists like Michelle Martinez, and then the best part: made us fold paper into sixes.

How was this the best part? Ho Chie Tsai had us write "passion," "purpose," and "people" in the three columns. In each, we'd write things related to each title. He took one delegate's paper and just by combining the different things she wrote in each column, he described her, her life, and her dream job. When I looked at mine, the consistent theme I saw was helping the Pilipino American community and Chicago, and it's a dream job I'm doing now.

18. While manning the BakitWhy.com table at registration, I had a very Pilipino moment. Something needed to be grabbed from the car, so I turned to my boyfriend and asked, "Did you fark par?" Took me a second or so to realize what I had just said and I just kneeled and put my head down on the table while my boyfriend, Camelia, and her boyfriend just laughed. At least I know I'm Pilipino!

17. Going back to 21 and 20 and speaking of videos, there were three other awesome videos at FACT:

Ram's Student Org leaders' shoutouts: http://bakitwhy.com/videos/fact-2010-variety-show-video
Kinema Group's FACT video: http://vimeo.com/16571318
And the MIDWEST I AM BAKITWHY shootout: http://bakitwhy.com/videos/i-am-bakitwhycom-midwest-shoutout

16. Going back to 24 and 23, Kevin Nadal is hilarious at stand-up comedy too.

15. Going back to 22, some people go to FACT because of the afterset… I go to FACT not only for FACT, but because of Cocomero and Sonic, two places that either solely exist in Urbana-Champaign or are more convenient to go to in Urbana-Champaign than driving to Chicago suburbs to reach. More than half of the BakitWhy Midwest team hit up both food places at the beginning and end of the FACT weekend.

14. Earning the title of best hair whipper during our BakitWhy photoshoot.

13. Watching my cousin (the cultural coordinator for UIC's FIA) perform a dance she choreographed, led, and organized. Having danced Pilipino cultural dances since my freshman year of high school (ahh, back in 2005!), I was like a proud mother watching her perform.

12. Hearing and seeing the crowd's reactions when they saw the BakitWhy celeb and org leaders' shoutouts... another really proud moment. I can only imagine how Ram, our media producer and the man who made the videos, felt when he heard the crowd!

11. Hearing some of the student org leaders' answers to BakitWhy Midwest team's questions for the FACT v-show video was very inspiring, especially with their answers like, "A leader lets their members know that THEY are leaders too." These leaders are the leaders of their orgs for a reason.

10. The Backstreet Boys singalong before v-show started. I tweeted the Backstreet Boys, and am still hoping they'll tweet BakitWhy and me back. Wouldn't that be cool?

9. Did I mention Chris and Marah's clever rewrite of "Bonjour!" from Beauty and the Beast? Well, it was that awesome that I had to mention it again.

8. Going back to 14, the sore neck I had the following Monday after all my hair whipping. The sacrifices we make for being the best...

7. Getting tweets from Dr. Nadal and Sunda co-owner Aeron Lancero that FACT *and* BakitWhy are awesome.

6. RYNE - without him, we wouldn't have covered this year's FACT conference like he did. And without him, I wouldn't have joined BakitWhy! You da man ;)

5. ROWIE - our awesome Midwest head of PR and such an organized lady. You're awesome, Rowie!

4. RAM - what more is there to say about this talented superstar busting out awesome quality videos left and right so quick?? You da man too ;)

3. CAMELIA - a powerful and passionate addition to our Midwest team, and I'm so glad she is. I can't wait to see what you'll do with BakitWhy, Cam :)

2. JASON, VOLTAIRE, and LIZELLE. - our equally passionate "assistants" for BakitWhy! Thank you all for your help, enthusiasm, and cameras :) My FACT experience wouldn't have been the same without you three.

1. Cheesy as it sounds, the number 1 best Feeny fact about FACT was... FACT. Going to FACT this year was a better and different experience than before, all because I was with the BakitWhy team as well as my boyfriend. Any conference you can go to, do go! That's all I can say.

Concert Chika: Teleserye Royals Concert in Chicago

iBakitWhy Blog Post by gephine
August 16, 2010

Hey everyone!

First of all, don't you love BakitWhy's new 3.0 site?? It's gonna make history within the Pilipino-American community here in the U.S.!! We're also gonna try to bridge the gap between young Pilipinos here in the U.S. and young Pilipinos back home in the Philippines.

One way we're gonna do that? Through ME, your Concert Chika*!

These past few months, I’ve had opportunities to experience things within the Pilipino culture that I only dreamt of experiencing. Things that I’d think of as a child with big, bright eyes (okay, maybe not big since I actually have pretty small eyes for a Pilipino) and think, “It’d never happen… but it’d be sooooo cool if it did!” Things that even just last year I thought would require $1,000+ and a whole lotta luck to happen.

And what are those things, you ask?

Concerts. And not just any concerts, but concerts featuring Pilipino stars like Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, Sarah Geronimo, and Bea Alonzo, just to name a few.

Some people, Pilipinos included, would ask me “Who are they?” or “So?...”. But I am an avid TFC (The Filipino Channel) viewer. Teleseryes (soap operas), no matter how unbelievably dramatic, are addicting to me. I watch ASAP XV (short for “Allstar Sunday Afternoon Party, TFC’s equivalent to maybe MTV’s old school Spring Break) just so I can scream “AYYYYYY SI SAM!!! (It’s Sam [Milby]!). When a new movie comes out, I always ask my mom if we’re gonna see it when it comes to the Chicagoland area. I’d watch these programs and movies and think, “I’m never gonna get to meet them.” But now I can say, “Hmm, maybe I’ll meet them.”

To make a long story short, last year I met Bboy Mangubat, a pretty famous concert promoter within the Pilipino entertainment circuit (he has Sam Milby’s phone number and Sam even knows his real name!). Because of my involvement within the Pilipino community in Chicago, my knowledge of and interest in the Pilipino entertainment industry, and my work with BakitWhy, he asked me to assist at, promote, and write about these concerts. Just this year, I’ve gotten to see/meet Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, John Lloyd Cruz, and more.

This past Friday, August 13, 2010, I went to the Teleserye Royals concert featuring the soap opera stores Gabby Concepcion, Maja Salvador, Coco Martin, Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu, and Maricar Reyes, singer/songwriter Yeng Constantino, and comedian Chokoleit. It was different from the previous Pilipino concerts because it was HILARIOUS, given Maja and Chokoleit’s comedic personalities. There was also a dance-off among a few audience members – including my cousin! – hosted by Maja (also known as the dance princess) and Chokoleit, an apple eat-off with Chokoleit and teleserye bad boy Coco Martin, and a dance line with veteran actor Gabby Concepcion, a favorite among the titas and lolas.

So if you’re an avid TFC viewer just like me, check out the photos from the Teleserye Royals concert! You can also see BakitWhy's coverage of the Heartthrobs & Friends concert and the Record Breaker concert.

Keep checking back here with me, the Concert Chika, for more blogs about Pilipino concerts!

*"Chika" is a Tagalog slang word for "gossip" or "chit-chat."
